The most common disease these days in the world is tooth decay or cavity formation and this is all due to the fast paced lifestyle and our negligence towards our tooth. We brush our teeth once or twice a day and are satisfied that they will remain intact. But this is not the case and the tooth decay or cavity formation is on the rise manifold. According to the dentists, the root cause for this problem is the habit of eating for good health.
One such victim was Suzanne Walters who luckily finds that her sparkling teeth have cavities in them. She used to take antacids whenever she felt like taking them and the sugar content in the antacid she took was a dominant reason behind this. In other words, she was an antacid addict who believed in self-medication.
When Suzanne went to see her dentist recently, she found out that the damage caused by the antacids she was taking on her own. Dr. Vincent Chiara, the dentist, had several patients other than Suzanne who developed cavities in no time. She paid a closer attention to the daily eating habits of the subjects having cavities.
Dr. Chiara said, “ People eat a lot of things that have sugar in them and they keep on with this habit without the knowledge of harm that it was doing to their dental health.”
People consume a lot of sugar everyday- be it with tea or coffee, form of candies, lozenges, etc.
The name sugar is replaced by dextrose or sucrose, glycol or glycerol. In some cases, corn syrup was even used. But all these types of names ultimately lead to one and that is sugar.
In a research carried out by Dr. Gary Grahos, who works at UIC's College of Dentistry, it was established that the sugar present in our mouth forms an acid that is dangerous for our tooth enamel.
Every candy or lozenge or mint toffee is kept at the most vulnerable and the weakest part of the cavity that acts as a shield for our tooth and avoids the formation of cavities.
But according to doctors, there are many ways to keep your teeth healthy. First of all is to cut on the amount of the lozenges or tablets per day. Always prefer sugar-free lozenges or tablets, as many of them are available in the market. It is also advised to brush your teeth regularly everyday. You can also rinse teeth whenever you find time as it hardly takes a few seconds. This ensures the protection of the valuable teeth.
Soda is also being used quite a lot these days and it is also harmful. We have also shunned the traditional drinking of the tap water, which is the rich source of fluorides. The bottled water instead is very much deficient in that and can’t help much avoiding the formation of cavities or the tooth enamel.
